Constructed Perceptions

For my senior design capstone project, I designed a 110-page interactive book about optical illusions. The book explains and provides examples of different kinds of optical illusions. It also includes articles about the history of optical illusions and how they work. My goal was to show people how optical illusions can be used as a metaphor for how we, as humans, interact with the world at large: in ambiguous situations, the only thing we can do is try to combine our senses and lived experience to interpret what is in front of us. But ultimately, our senses are not always accurate and a lot of times, there can be multiple accurate interpretations.

The interactivity of the book was really important to me because I wanted to balance a fun, but also purposeful and educational experience. Throughout the process, I incorporated laser cutters, as well as differently sized, colored, and textured paper. The various materials appear in the design system as pop-out pages, pull out/ animated pages, and fold outs.
